CRUISIN' DOWN...THE MISSISSIPI

WEDNESDAY. JULY 11 — This morning we "head for the hills" of Galena, Illinois, known as The New England of the Midwest. Upon arriving in Galena, we will enjoy lunch at The Fried Green Tomatoes Restaurant. You'll even have some delicious fried green tomatoes on your plate to sample. After lunch we'll have some time to browse through the shops and visit several of the antique stores. You may also discover that their buildings are as old as some of their merchandise in this "old" river town. Mid-afternoon we’ll take a trolley tour of the Galena area, including compelling views of Galena's marvelous architecture, tall tales of the river bottom, and a little gossip that has lain around long enough...its history. Our tour will end at the Ulysses S. Grant Home, where you’ll have a chance to see many of Grant's possessions and original furnishings. Following our time in Galena we'll make our way into Iowa to Dubuque. A local guide will join us to explore this interesting river town as we enjoy a progressive dinner enroute — making stops at the Mathias Ham House for our first course, then to Stone Cliff Winery for our main course, and the last stop for dessert at the Mandolin Inn House. After a very busy day, it will be time to check-into our lodging for a good night’s rest. (L) (D)

THURSDAY. JULY 12 — We're off to the Mighty Mississippi bright and early this morning to board our awaiting vessel for our "Summer Excursion.” As we relax cruising down the river, the captain will point out sights of interest along the way and explain the procedure of "locking through" as we pass Lock & Dam 12 & 13. You’ll even be invited to visit the pilot house to see the river the way Mark Twain saw it in his days as a pilot. Our cruise passes through a variety of picturesque scenery, with the river's character changing around each bend. Long stretches of primitive river landscape are punctuated by islands with quaint sounding names. Water birds and wildlife along the shore show little more than a casual interest in the passing river boats. Just when you think you might be bored with all this nature, one of several waterfront towns comes into view and you’ll wave back to the people there who wish they could trade places with you. For a change of pace there will be fun, activities, and live entertainment taking place inside. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served aboard today along with a mid-afternoon snack. After a fun-filled and relaxing day on the river we'll dock in Moline and begin our homeward journey bringing with us many beautiful memories of our Mississippi River Excursion (B) (L) (D)
